I was reading about mineral make up in the other foums, but as I'm 57, I really need to stay in this forum ! :D I don't know anything about this, I haven't seen it, but would it be any good for my skin ? Better than ordinary foundation? or worse ?

Hi- I'm 49, and I've tried many mineral makeups, believing as you do that they're better for my skin. They're not. They brag about the abscense of talc, but anyone with any chemistry in their educational background knows that talc is a mineral, too. All I ever noted was these are basically powder foundations, more opague and pigment rich than standard pressed powder. Some, like Bare Escentuals, contain mica. That imparts an iridescent shimmer - I looked like the tin man!
They're OK to use - don't get me wrong - if you like a powder foundation or need a little extra coverage. They set makeup well, and a good formulation DOES feel nice and apply well.
Overall, they're no miracle, and if you're sensitive to any of the ingredients, you wil still have problems.
You can go to www.cosmeticscop.com (http://www.cosmeticscop.com), and download a free copy of Paula Begoun's report on mineral makeup. She's been reviewing cosmetics based on their chemistry and ingredients for more than 20 years.
Cheers,
Barbara

Just because you're 57 doesn't mean you need to stay in this forum! :o

I think it depends on your skin and what it likes. For me mineral makeup was less clogging and healthier for my skin compared to regular foundation. I've only tried Aromaleigh though (their old pure powder one). Everyday Minerals seem to be very popular. Check out the general makeup forum, there are lots of posts about MU there. Just do a search or post a question. I'm sure someone can help you out. I would also like to echo MRC0806: You don't have to stay in only the "mature beauty" forum just because of your age. :)

LOL ...ok I will sit in a corner in the general forum, with a bag over my head and just listen !! I will look for mineral make up & maybe try some , but so far the best thing for me has been Olay everyday sunshine --it is enough because I have good clear skin and it makes me look a wee bit healthier .

My mother in law who is in her late fifties just started using bare minerals. She looks great. She said she has been loving it so much that she just threw out all her other makeup this past weekend. I've never tried mineral makeup so I can't speak for myself, but I say try it out!

BTW: She has very sensitive roscea skin

I'm 38 and just started using Bare Essentials & LOVE it!. I was very afraid because I have dry skin & some fine lines around my eyes & not convinced it would do well for me.

I was wrong. It melts in to my skin & looks fresh & youthful all day. My skin looks smooth and poreless when I have it on. I do NOT use the Mineral Veil because then it starts getting a little cakey. I see no use for Mineral Veil on my skin.

I tried the Neutrogena Mineral Makeup before I tried BE because I have to travel 3 hours to get to a sephora or BE store. I would have told you the Neutrogena was nice, but a little drying...still worth keeping & using occasionally.

After using BE now, I'll tell you that Neutrogena is crap (on my skin), and I can't even imagine going back to traditional liquid foundation.

I say you should try it if you're curious. It might not work for you...but then you might have this whole religious experience with it like I did.

Do you have a Sephora near you? You could go in and tell them you're interested. They'll put it on you and show you how to apply it and everything. It would give you an idea of what the coverage is like and how it feels.

I used to think I could never wear powders on my skin because it was so dry, but I just started using Bare Escentuals a couple of weeks ago and it really really works well with my skin. I couldn't be happier. I had only used one other mineral makeup in the past, by Julie Hewett, and while nice, it wasn't quite the right color and I iddn't really know how to apply it, so I thought I didn't like it....

Anyway, it's worth a shot. I know there are also several different companies you could order samples from. I think Everyday Minerals is pretty popular on the regular Makeup board.

If it looks too cakey, the formula might be too light in coverage, has fillers or you are using too much. Even using a brush or a flocked sponge can really affect the way it turns out on your skin.

My mom is 56 & uses BE & it has done wonders for her skin. I think it's all YMMV - it works for some, not for others, just like everything else. The best thing to do is sample & test lines. I know alot of girls like Everyday Minerals & they offer very cheap samples. BE is my HG - I love it! Just be sure to moisturize well & use a good primer & you should be set :)

I bet Everyday Minerals Original Glo formula would be great on more mature skin -it really diffuses flaws.

I haven't switched to mineral yet, but I'm thinking about it- I've heard great things from some of my friends. This video has a some more information on mineral makeup which you might find helpful

The better.tv site is pretty helpful actually - it has a lot of great makeup tips in general for 40+ women.

This is an interesting question because I've had hit-or-miss results with minerals. I have fine lines around my eyes and although I love how mineral concealers "melt" into the skin on the rest of my face, they always accentuate my fine lines. Maybe I haven't found the right formula yet. For me personally, minerals are a nice alternative to regular pressed powder, but that's about it. Plus, my skin is supersensitive, and minerals make it itchy. I would say that if you like to wear powder foundation, shop around for one that's a good skin tone match and maybe try some mineral samples in the meantime. Everyday Minerals makes a sample set that you can order for just the cost of shipping.

Joppa Minerals "Simple Radiance Foundation" is great for dry or aging skin. I was having major trouble with other formulas settling into my fine lines but this one really works great. BE is pretty good too but unfortunatly my skin does not react well to the bismuth.

I found minerals with mica listed first as the ingredient tends to be less drying on my face. Brands like Lumiere, EM, Blusche, Pure Ananda have been pretty good for my drier skin.

Mineral makeup is absolutely so easy to use, fast to apply and if you decide to try it out, please check out divine minerals. It has only 4 ingredients, SPF 15 which is so important and super affordable. 10g of foundation $12. And please remember that you are still young and can try out all different ways to wear mineral makeup, you will be glad you experimented!

Good luck!

I 2nd this rec - or their Semi-Matte formula. Both have enough "glow" to make skin look more youthful!
