I would like to treat my mother to a make-up consultation at a makeup counter at the mall for her Christmas present. I know she's never had this done and now that I've gotten her on a better skin care regimen I want to polish her up with some fresh makeup and toss that Tammy Faye mascara she's been putting on for years. She's up for it and excited about it, because she'd never spend that kind of money on herself, but I wasn't sure where to take her. I would pop over to the M.A.C. counter for myself, but she's 55 and I don't necessarily think they would give her the kind of everyday "look" she'd want. Any suggestions as to which counter to steer her to? She mentioned that she likes the looks at the Estee Lauder counter, but I thought I would do some more research and present her with a few more options.

How about BE for something new and different? Otherwise for dept store maybe Bobbi Brown, Estee Lauder, Merle Norman, Lancome, Shiseido for starters.

My mum is almost the same age and she loves MAC. Other alternatives could be Laura Mercier, Estee Lauder or Bobbi Brown- depending on what's around. Anyone brand that has a line ofquality products that suitably targets her age group.

I would go with MAC. But you're right, Estee Lauder or something like Lancome seems more reserved. You could take her on 2 makeovers and just buy a couple things each time instead of a lot at a single counter. :)

Actually, if you're planning to buy her some stuff too I would do the consults before Christmas I know a lot of us need some time with foundation before we can tell if it's right or not and sometimes in the store with the person that applied the stuff there it's harder to say that you don't like something anyway.

I do like MAC for color (but not for foundation or powder) but I also like a lot of other brands and most department stores will give consultations for free.

You can always think of spending the extra time with her as girls days out with mom which she'd probably appreciate as well:)

My mom is in her sixties, but she likes going to the MAC counter with me. After all with the wide range of shades, there's always something for everyone. She also likes Estee Lauder(more classic shades), and Clinque(neutral shades).

Whatever you get her though, I'm sure she'll love it(Moms always love whatever you give them) :)

I'd recommend Clinique, Estee Lauder or even MAC. My mother-in-law uses both Clinique and Estee Lauder products, but she also picked MAC Golder's Green pigment out of my stash when I did her makeup once. I agree that with the wide variety of shades there is something for everyone at the MAC counter.

It's not quite as high-dollar, but I would also suggest Clinique. Your mom would probably be more comfortable with their prices and most of the colors are nice and neutral but there are a few vivid ones for special occasions. My mom got a Clinique makeup application before her highschool reunion and she loved it.

My mom loves Clinque!! It's her favorite! She's in her early 50's, and I'm 13, and I love it too!! We have some Estee Lauder too.

I would def. recommend Bobbi Brown. Her colors are always very wearer friendly and work appropriate. Now that she has the shimmering eye palette the line is even ... dare I say it... slightly playful. I think it's a great place to start and not be overwhelmed
