I hope you find a new job. I hope that you find something out of retail as well if that is what you want.

I hope you find an office job. Have you ever worked one before?

If not a word of advice...look for one in a smaller company lol

It's too easy to be turned into the whole business's personal secretary in large setting.

Good luck with your job search! You def need a job that is going to challenge you a bit more if you feel it's below your education level. http://community.icompact.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Office jobs aren't always easy to come by but good luck. Hope you get the hrs you need.

I hate the generalization that mall employees barely made it out of HS. I know a lot of university grads working retail. Sorry it's not your thing, but know that it's "beneath" a lot of ppl who are forced to settle for it.

BTW, isn't it "JC Penney"?

Sorry that you not really enjoying your job anymore.

A lot of people do jobs that are "beneath" them. When I worked in a bookstore, most everyone there had a college degree. And in this day's market, you sometimes just have to take what can get just so you can pay the bills. It seems like now days a Bachelor's degree is equivalent to a high school diploma.

If you think you can do the manager's job, perhaps you can stick around and wait for an opening.

I really do hope you can find something that interests you.

I wouldn't get so cocky...like it was mentioned, a lot of ppl have to settle for what they consider "beneath them". Your still young enough so there's plenty of time to climb the ladder--so to speak...you just have to pay your dues like most everyone.

Okay people. I WAS NOT GETTING COCKY OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT. What is so cocky about acknowledging that you have skills and abilities and that you CAN get a job better suited to those abilities? I know a lot of people take jobs beneath them for a multitude of reasons. I took this job because I needed the money. But due to the way the store is, it's not working for me anymore. And yes, I could do the manager's job. Sorry if that sounds conceited and cocky to you all, but it's the truth. And I'm 25 and have been working since I was 18. Don't talk to me about "paying my dues".

BTW, I might have some freelance editing work coming my way and I have a job interview next week for a secretary.

Some background info: I'm getting my Bachelor's of Arts in English. I'm almost done (have about 1-2 yrs as part time student) and I already have an associates degree. I think I'm qualified for secretary jobs. I have also worked in retail for approx. 5 years.

Sorry that your hours are getting cut. I also have friends who are in University or about to graduate and they are in retail jobs etc just to make ends meet. I hope you find a job suited to your skills. Good luck! Keep us updated. http://community.icompact.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It's not conceited to say you can do the manager's job, it's a whole other attitude to say, "it really is beneath my education level. I mean, you know a job is beneath you when you can say without any type of conceit that you have the skills, knowledge and ability to do the manager's job" - Do you realize you seriously put down that position by wording it that way? I'm sorry but it needs to be said, I'm sure the manager, who is inferior to you IYO, knows the correct name of the store.

It's one thing to acknowledge that you have skills that should get you a better job, but there's no need to put down other jobs in the process.

If you're so sure they "CAN" get you a better job & you worked 5 yrs in retail & therefore know what it's like, you probably shouldn't have accepted this one in the first place. I get the $ thing, but clearly, you don't respect anyone working in retail from the tone of your initial post.

I could have worded it differently and honestly did not realize how it sounded when I wrote it. I do not think anyone working at JC Penney's is beneath me or anything of the sort. My job as a cashier is beneath my education level. And it doesn't have anything to do with education anyways. I know that I have the skills and abilities to do an office job or be a manager for that matter. And I have the desire and drive to get a better job for myself. I'm sorry if verbalizing my own self-worth is offending you all. I don't have a problem with any of the people who work there and whatnot. It's just that I'm finding that I want to put my knowledge, skills, and abilities to use some place. And it's not Penney's.

Hmm..I thought I could post my feelings on these boards and have a few people understand instead of people getting all bent out of shape because how sentences are worded. But I forgot that this is a message board and will never be posting anything of the sort again.

Sorry if this makes anyone mad, but I totally understood Michelle's original post and don't think she was trying to upset or disrespect anyone at all.

It's awful to have to do something day in and day out that doesn't interest or challenge you because you have to. For anybody. I really think that was all she was trying to say...shucks people, give her a break.

As an English student, it shouldn't be news to you that how things are worded has a lot to do w/ how a point is made, & esp. on the internet where it's not like you're hearing a person's tone, it's important to write what you mean.

As for paying your dues, in my part of the world anyway, many 25 yr olds aren't exactly where they'd like to be either, so you're not alone. As I said earlier, good luck.

Michelle I completely understand what you are trying to say and I never felt you were trying to belitlle people who work in retail!

It is OK to be a little more ambitious, have self-confidence and try for the best! It doesn't make you a bad person! I think it is very healthy and that it will eventually help you find the job you deserve!

Like many people have mentioned lots of university grads work in retail but most ones only think of it as temporary job that will provide some money! It is a sort of transitional period between university and the job you eventually want to have! At least that is how I see it and that's what most of my friends have done!

Of course you should feel free to post your feelings here! That's what the OT is all about! http://community.icompact.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

At least I didn't offend everyone. And I did spell JCPenney's right. It's spelled that way on everything in the store as well on the paperwork I have at home.

I think what Laura meant to say regarding the spelling is that it's "JCPenney" not "JCPenney's" with the "s". Not that the name is spelled wrong. I just checked the website myself and it says "JCPenney".

Wow people are very sensitive on this board... I for one think your right ... if your bored with your job then start looking for another one and fast. Your young and needs to experience different work settings to find out what you like not to mention the possibility of making more money. Its so easy to get stuck and although there's no such thing as a dead end job because if you enjoy doing it your bound to advance in it but if you dont like it then you'll turn it into a dead end job because your not able to really give it your all. Hopefully your interview will go well. BTY I personally recommend employment agencies (for office jobs) because most of the companies I've worked for hire thru agencies instead of just posting in newpapers etc. I also think its too bad you cant post your frustrations without someone getting offended. I mean so what the heck does it matter if its JCPENNEY or JCPENNEYS I couldnt care less but thats just me I guess. Anyway LOTS OF LUCK TO YOU !!!!

Michelle,

Actually when I first read your post, I did think it was rather arrogant sounding - but I understood what you were trying to express.

Just as I wrote in Laura's post, I hope you don't leave as well. Your opinions on issues are very frank and honest and I respect that in people. As opposed to people who are nice to you in person and may always agree with you, but then behind your back say differently.

...anyways, I really do hope you find a fulfilling job soon http://community.icompact.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yikes almighty what the heck happened in this thread? You know i work in retail, and plenty of times i feel like i oculd do better... but i never forget that im lucky to have a job in teh first place. I would never consider anyone that works in retail ueducated or settling. We all get frustruated with our jobs, no matter what they are.
Please keep in mind that there is always the oppurtunity in life for peopel to disagree with you, rather than getting bent out of shape by it, take it as a learning experience to view all sides of the story.
