...use those exact makeup items on the models and celebrities?
I mean, have you guys looked through Allure. Each model has a makeup description along with the brand of jeans they're wearing.
I wonder if certain makeup brands pay the magazine to actually use their products.
I know when I see spokespeople wearing the brand they represent.
i.e. -Kate Bosworth wore all Revlon on her Cosmo covers.

I'm looking at the new Elle with Lindsay Lohan on it. All the makeup listed on her is Cover Girl. Do you think they just suggest similar colors of a certain brand, or are they actually using the products, write it down, then type it up in the description.

I really think that they're just trying to sell whatever products they recommend. Sometimes I see a similarity and sometimes I own the product they rec and it couldn't possibly be the one the cover model has on http://community.icompact.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I highly doubt it too, they usually say "this look can be created using...," so that seems to me that they didn't use exact same products.

Awhile back someone on here said that all Allure covers used Laura Mercier, so I went and checked what it said in some issues. Every one I checked said "For this look try.....", instead of "model is wearing....". I'm convinced from that that the covers are not the actual products.

All the spreads in the rest of the Allure mags list specific products, and if they're not using the exact products they're dang close. When they've listed products I already own, I'd note that they looked similar in the pics as they did on me. But that could be done just like the cover.

No, they just use the makeup of whatever company is paying to be featured. A while back they had Jeanine Lobell (creator of Stila) do and Allure cover with Natalie Portman and all the products listed were by CoverGirl or some other drugstore makeup. As if Jeanine Lobell is not going to use her own line! And once again it said "Natalie's look can be re-created using the following products".

I read an article recently that said that even shampoo adverts and shampoo commercials usually don't use the products they're trying to promote. The hairstylist on set will use whatever they're used to using.

Allure has gotten a bit better, but sometimes in their fashion spreads, the model has on the exact same makeup throughout the feature, but different colours are listed on each page. And with all the retouching, even if the actual shade was listed, it most likely doesn't even look the same as when it was photographed.

I read somewhere that they just use names of whoever is the sponsor or something. I havent even seen a cover with MAC makeup and they are one of the major pro brands right? And some of the lines they name it couldnt be that colour especially drugstore and the model is really fair to begin with.

I highly doubt it too! It's whichever companies are paying the big bucks that they get mentioned.

I always get a little bit annoyed when they do that.

ITA. This is exactly what they do. A company will pay $$ to get a magazine to promote it. If you look closer, they'll name a professional m/u artist or agency who was responsible for the looks on the pages. Its more than likely those artists use many, many different brands.

I just read a great book called "Color Stories" that talks about this exact thing. That's why they've gone to saying "can be created by" - to avoid any further investigation.

I should have known something was fishy a couple years ago when they said a model was wearing a lipstick I own that is kind of a pinky bronze and it was bright red on her, and CG Black Tie e/s although all her shadow was brown. LOL.

The thing is, makeup artists probably don't even know what is what in their kits anymore because they usually have everything smashed into pallettes and use the same stuff on everyone. Which is pretty darned gross, when you think about it.
