So, I've been trying to figure out how to pay for my health insurance now that my dad refuses to help pay for it. For the record, he's being a colossal jackass about it all. Turns out, that I WILL be getting full time hours and benefits at JCPenney. Apparently, they don't want to lose me. But those benefits (health insurance) will not kick in until at least July. I'm trying to figure out a way to pay for my current insurance through June. I just have to come up with April, May, and June's payment which totals roughly $1500. Yes, that's a lot. But they pay for EVERYTHING except office visits. It even covers my counseling cost. The only way I can pay for it is to take out a loan. I have credit card debt as well. So, I'm adding that to the insurance cost and figure I'll need about a $5000 loan. I will be able to pay off my credit and won't have to pay them every month plus a loan payment. In a weird way, it makes sense since my credit account is closed anyways. But here's the problem. I have no collateral and my credit rating is shot. So my chances of getting this loan even with a co-signer is pretty much nil. My dad won't help me out by taking out a loan in his name. I feel like crawling under my covers and not getting out of bed for 2 months. And yes, my dad knows that I'll be getting health insurance through JCPenney in July. He still refuses to help pay for it. And this whole isurance thing is between me and my dad so while my mom would help if she could, none of this involves her so it's not fair to ask her to help pay for it. I'm just having a depressive episode right now and needed to vent. I really don't know what else to do.

I personally would not take such an extensive policy out before your work insurance kicks in. my friend took out a policy with State Farm and its $150 a month. I would check out options. $1500 is ridiculous if you will be getting full benefits in July. You are also covered the month after your benefits are dropped and you can buy cobra and it will be retroactive.

Hang in there. I know it will work out!

I agree, def check around to other places before you pay. I hope everything gets better soon!

This insurance is Cobra and is through my dad's employer, Caterpillar. They have the cadillac plan of insurance which is why it's so expensive. We've been paying it since last October. But my dad refuses to pay it from April on. This isn't a new policy or anything. It's my existing one that I've been on my whole life. But I just need to be on it for a few more months until my JCPenney isurance kicks in. Only I have no way to pay for it. So, if I don't get a loan, I don't have health insurance for at least 3 months.

do you *need* the health insurance for the three months you won't be covered? What's the worse that can happen in the three months you're not covered? Do you feel like you can just let it slide until you have the coverage to get it back? Is there a way you could do without for a while?

I don't mean to be ignorant about this or anything, I really don't know what you're willing to accept. Can you see yourself doing ok without the health insurance for three months?

I got the loan. My dad's a cosigner. I'm also paying off my credit card debt as well so that will be good. As for needing insurance, well, I don't want to pay full price for my prescriptions. Plus, with the way life goes, I'd probably get injured or super sick if I went without it. Because of how expensive health care is, it's worth it to me to take a loan to pay for my insurance than go with out and end up being several thousand dollars in debt if something would happen.

I wouldn't go without any insurance. Just when you think nothing will go wrong in 3 months, something will, and health care is very expensive. My husband just had emergency surgery last month. It would have cost us $8,000 without insurance. It was $400 with.

However, I agree with PrincessAlli. Shop around. There is definitely cheaper health insurance out there than what you are getting. COBRA can be extremely expensive.

I really don't know anything about American medical insurance but wanted to say that I hope everything improves for you Michelle. I know you have been through a rough time lately and I am sending good vibes your way. http://community.icompact.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
