What is the purpose for this? Does your hair grow faster when you do this?

I do a variation on this.
My hair is super greasy so I only wash the roots with a clarifying shampoo. Then I cover the rest of my hair in conditioner. I leave it on for a little bit, comb through with my fingers. Then rinse it all off.
I really like Mane&Tail conditioner. It's cheap and comes in a big bottle so I don't worry about using too much too quickly.
