I'm not a customer, but I found this story today in case anyone wants to know:

P&G To Close Online Cosmetics Business
Closure To Affect Less Than 45 Employees

POSTED: 12:15 pm EDT June 7, 2005

CINCINNATI -- Procter & Gamble Co. will shut down its online customized cosmetics business at the end of the month.

The Cincinnati-based consumer products maker started its online cosmetics experiment, Reflect.com, in 1999. Reflect.com, based in San Francisco, will take orders until June 13 and ship all products by June 17.

Company executives have said that P&G invested at least $60 million in Reflect.com in three rounds of funding.

Spokeswoman Cheryl Hudgins said the experiment was a learning experience for P&G, which will now apply some of the same techniques to its beauty-care brands. Those brands include Olay skin cream and Cover Girl cosmetics.

"What happened was, we learned what we needed to learn," said Hudgins, who would not confirm P&G's investment or give other details on finances of the San Francisco company.

She said the closing would affect fewer than 45 employees.

P&G started the online business as a way to sell directly to consumers rather than through retailers' Web sites and to customize the product's color, packaging and other features to a consumer's specifications.

Yeah, I knew this because graceful made a post in the iCompact News section. Can't say I'm sad about it, as I had never tried anything. I did browse their site - it was neat, but the prices were too high for something I might or might not like.

I'm not surprised. I tried their stuff out back in 1999/2000, and they were mostly disappointing. You'd find better beauty products at the drugstore or department store.

They had a neat concept. I ordered a cleanser and it was scented. I called and they sent me a new one and I didn't have to send the old one back. I liked being about to personalize the bottles.

This is exactly why I never ordered!

It was a neat concept. I tired it when they first opend shop and were giving out samples. The foundation reminded me of Colorstay. Why spend $$$ for a custimized bottle of that. They did start selling some e/s in Pure Beauty stores though. I wonder if that was a last ditch effort to save the brand.

I tried a fragrance sampler in which you were given 3 different variations of one fragrance which you "customized". Well, they all smelled the same to me. I would even smell one, then wait a while before smelling the next, etc. I was always tempted to buy something else from them, but never did because I simply didn't buy into the whole "custom" thing. How customized can something get over the internet?
