I didnt know who else to ask because its quite...well...embarassing. I had surgery a couple weeks ago, and because of the pain meds, I got really constipated. After 5 days ( http://community.icompact.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I know) I finally went, but it was so painful. Ever since then, it has been so painful to go to the bathroom. It is even bleeding. What should I do? Is there something over the counter that will help calm everything down?

I'm not sure if you're asking for relief from hemorrhoids or constipation. For constipation, don't use stimulant laxatives. You can try citracel in orange juice. Drink lots of water also. Exercise helps if you can. There's Preparation H and Tucks for hemorrhoids. If it's that pain, you might call your doctor. He might prescribe a cortisone cream.

Preparation H or a drugstore knock-off has always worked for me. I got terrible hemorrhoids while I was pregnant. An ice pack also works, but it sure is a strange place to put it! Also try soaking in a warm bathtub to help with the pain.

Try working out in general, it will work to tighten up the muscles and trust me, it helps. Of course, wait until you are okay since you just had surgery.

Eat fiber (such as oatmeal and veggies). Ease up on concentrated carbs (pasta). Don't sleep/lie down after you eat, wait until you have a bowel movement first. Try stool softeners, but make sure it doesn't conflict with anything else you are taking.

Drink lots of water but cut out soda, coffee, and tea. Also, don't drink alcohol!

pysillium husks are good non drug and habit forming way to ease consitpation. habit forming being that you cant go without taking a laxative.

slippery elm capsules are also good for soothing and helping heal.

I found taking a vitamin e capsule was really good when eating anything that could cause pain especially spicy foods.

And soak in a basin of water is good. I also found using Rescue remedy cream or spray helped too. These all can be found at health food stores.

Thanks a bunch girls! I really apprciate your replies. Everything is calmed down now and Im back to normal. I used hydrocortisone cream and that helped so much. Thanks again http://community.icompact.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
