Everytime i dye my hair it turns out red. Dries me nuts. I want to dye it a medium brown, with no brinzy golden tone. Anyone have any ideas?

I think ash tones has no red in them, but I could be wrong. I know when I used to dye my hair blonde, the ash colors worked well. I'm not totally sure they have ash browns, I think so. Sorry I can't be more helpful http://community.icompact.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I have the same problem, Jaime - I've got natural reddish tones in my hair, so when I dye it, they seem to come out more. Feria Espresso has worked best for me.

I go to a salon and specifically have them mix a dark brown colour with no red in it. It's one of my major pet peeves as well. I can't stand the way brown shades can turn reddish. I'm not sure what my colourist uses, but next time I'm in, I'll ask her what her ratios are.

Thanks, Gimlet!! I for one would appreciate it! I have a lot of red in my hair naturally and no matter what ash tone I use, I end up with more red.

Go to Sally's and check out the Clairol MCMaxx (I think that is what it's called) line. Look for the browns that have a blue or violet base. Those shouldn't produce any red. There's a color called Bewitching Brown that's really nice. And it looks sort of light but ash shades always go a shade or so darker. Also Jaime, L'Oreal Preference has some good ash shades. My hair always turns red too (naturally medium brown) and I recently had some highlights put in that I didn't like and my base was sort of reddish, so I picked up Preference in 4A Dark ash brown last night and I really like how it came out! Someone on MUA rec'd it to me because it has a blue/violet base. I used this shade a few years back and forgot how nice it is. My hair doesn't look red at all. Just a nice deep chocolate brown. It's definitely dark, so if you want more of a medium, maybe try light or medium ash brown. But I am not sure if these have a blue/violet base to them. Some ash shades have a green base, but I've found that those don't get rid of red as well. Well I HTHS! http://community.icompact.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thank you for all the replies! I count go to a Sallys, because i lilve in Vancouver and we dont have one here http://community.icompact.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I ended up using hte loreal preference in light ash brown, well that wasnt such a good idea... my blonde highlights ended up going a greeny grey colour! Not a good look. I normally use the straight medium brown in this line and find it rather dark. So i redyed it with the light brown. It cover it pretty well and then i invested in a colour condioner by Aveda that was made with a choolate brown color. I love this product by the way... the sopecifically formulate it for what ever colour you would like! And you can choose your own smell! It isnt just a colour protecting conditioner either, it actually deposits colour!

ok- so I asked my colourist at the salon yesterday. She said the key is to use a colour that does not lift hair colour (one that has no peroxide or ammonia in it). It needs to be a deposit only haircolour. Anything with ammonia or peroxide, lifts dark brown tones to red no matter how careful or how dark you go with it.
