How do you find a good colorist or know a good one when you've found one?

Maybe some magazines like Allure. I remember seeing a section that had the best salons that specialized in color in different cities. I found my colorist in Manhattan, NY. Since I have curly hair I went to www.naturallycurly.com (http://www.naturallycurly.com) and found a salon that way because of people's reviews and them mentioning with stylist was great with color.
