Can you recommend a good exercise machine?

I've decided it's time to invest in a treadmill or something. I want to get in better shape and start feeling better about myself. I've seen the ads for the Bowflex Tread Climber machine and it looks like something I would use, but the price tag is too high.
What do you ladies recommend? I'm not a runner and Stair Climbers are too hard for me, so should I look for a basic treadmill? Or an elliptical? (whatever that is!) Ideally it would be under $1000 and able to fold up for storage, since my house isn't that big. I've never bought anything like this and I'm too embarrassed to go to a store to ask for help
Thanks

I love my elliptical! I got a good basic one for only $100 (on sale) online. The nice thing about ellipticals is they're great on your joints, unlike a treadmill, and the machines themselves are fairly small and light. Mine doesn't fold up, but it takes up a tiny corner of my living room unlike a larger treadmill. Because ellipticals are powered by your motion, many don't need to be plugged in either. I love to run, but treadmills kill my knees. Definitely look into ellipticals! You should also shop online-there are really good deals. I got mine from an elliptical superstore website for 60% off.

Is there a brand that is better than others? Are there certain features I should look for?

Your best bet is to do some research-read reviews on Amazon! I didnt buy mine through Amazon, but they tend to have the most reviews. You can even buy good ones at Walmart!

Another rec for an elliptical. I used to have one, but it was old, cheap and broke down. It gave me good results while it was running good though. Definitely look into a good one that will last a long time. My brother have one (and I'm looking into) that's the brand Proform. The one he has is more compact, which is what I like. Some ellipticals are big and bulky, but some are more compact but just as good. I'm planning to get one in the near future, and it'll be in my bedroom, so it has to be more compact. Hope that helps!!
